Back pain is familiar territory to many women who have been through a pregnancy. For those whose pain is severe enough to warrant physical therapy, there is a new tool for postpartum patients: rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI).
Safe and radiation-free, this technology allows a physical therapist to see the patient’s abdominal muscles during a physical therapy session, and modify the exercises to target specific muscle groups having trouble contracting. “Our goal is to identify the potential source of the pain and help women return safely to physical exercise,” says Kathy Cieslak, a physical therapist at Mayo Clinic’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
In the video below, Kathy Cieslak explains in detail how this ultrasound treatment helps.
